A call to action against food waste. Based on this premise, an agreement was signed on February 21, 2023, at Beer&Food Attraction between Unionbirrai, the association of independent small breweries, and Biova Project, an innovative start-up created to recover food surplus using recovery centers throughout Italy.
The goal is to combat food waste, starting from the idea that beer is an excellent way to recover starches (bread, pasta, rice), and to implement a nationwide network that increasingly promotes recovery and transformation, creating a widespread model of sustainable business both economically and ecologically.
In Italy, 13,000 quintals of bread are thrown away every day. According to a study by the International Association of the Industrial Bakery, the average Italian consumer consumes 52 kilograms of bread per year. Therefore, the bread discarded every day could feed 25,000 people for a year.

The agreement was formally signed by Simone Monetti, national secretary of Unionbirrai, and Franco Dipietro, founder of Biova Project, along with Emanuela Barbano.

Founded in November 2019 in Turin, Biova Project is the innovative food innovation start-up with the mission of reducing food waste for the planet by creating new products with high added value: both in terms of taste and economic and social impact.
Through local projects, they have launched their idea in various regions of Italy, but with the agreement with Unionbirrai, they aim to spread the project even further, allowing the transformation of surplus as close as possible to its recovery area.
